Shamrock Rovers should be proud despite Conference League exit

On Thursday night, Irish outfit Shamrock Rovers exited the Europa Conference League at the play-off stage. Rovers headed into their second-leg tie against Norwegian side Molde 1-0 up from the first leg in Scandinavia.

The visitors recorded a 1-0 win in normal time at the Tallaght Stadium, courtesy of a goal from veteran former Manchester United midfielder Magnus Wolff Eikrem. The goal took the game into extra-time, and Molde recorded a 5-4 victory on penalty kicks.

In truth, Rovers had enough chances in the game to progress, but it was not to be. Veteran substitute forward Aaron Greene missed his spot-kick, and Molde’s Eirik Hestad fired home to send his team into the last 16 of the competition.

Arguably unlucky not to progress

While many connected with Shamrock will be disappointed by the team’s exit at the play-off stage, Rovers have had a run to remember in Europe this season.

Due to an injury-crisis boss and the suspension of Dylan Watts and Dan Clearly, Stephen Bradley was forced into starting teenagers Michael Noonan and Cory O’Sullivan against Molde. The former is just 16 years of age.

There were also seven other teenagers on the substitutes bench, and they couldn’t name a full complement of substitutes. The subs included 17-year-old goalkeeper Todd Bazunu, who is the brother of Republic of Ireland international stopper Gavin Bazunu.

Considering the circumstances, the odds were always stacked against Shamrock’s progress, but they never really looked out of place in the competition.

Molde is a team with considerable European experience, as they have played in Europe in five of the last six seasons, including playing in the preliminary of the UEFA Champions League. They were not easy opponents by any stretch of the imagination.

It wouldn’t be unfair to claim Shamrock deserved to go through over the two legs. However, they just didn’t take their chances, and it came back to haunt them with the penalty kick defeat.

Making history for the Irish game

While Shamrock Rovers crashed out of the UEFA Conference League, there was still a lot for Rovers to be proud of. They made history by becoming the first Irish club to ever make it to the knockout stages of a European competition.

It was quite an achievement, considering the club’s resources compared to those of some of its opponents.

Stellar names from some elite leagues were in this season’s UEFA Conference League, including former European champions Chelsea. Fiorentina from Italy and Real Betis from Spain were two other storied clubs in the competition for season 2024/25.

Shamrock lost just one of their six games in the league stage of the competition. That defeat came against big-spending Premier League outfit Chelsea, who defeated Rovers 5-1 at Stamford Bridge on matchday 6.

The Irish outfit recorded victories over the likes of New Saints, Larne and Borac Banja Luka, as well as claiming a decent 1-1 draw away at Rapid Vienna, who themselves are a seasoned European team.

The results in the league stage were undoubtedly encouraging. Unfortunately for Rovers, the defeat in their final league game cost them an automatic place in the competition’s last-16. Getting any result against Chelsea was always going to be difficult, but a place in the play-offs was a good consolation.

Shamrock is a good example to other clubs from the Republic

Shamrock Rovers have played in three European competitions this season. Unfortunately, they lost to Sparta Prague in the UEFA Champions League play-offs. They bowed out at the same stage of the Europa League against Greek side PAOK, once again getting so close to the league stage.

It was a case of third time lucky, as they ended up in the UEFA Conference League without having to play in a preliminary round.

Rovers’ run in the competition is an excellent example to all Irish clubs of what can be achieved with determination, hard work, and acumen. When it comes to fans’ attention, the Irish game often plays second fiddle to the English Premier League, with many Irish fans also supporting a club across the Irish Sea.

However, last night at the Tallaght Stadium, more than 9,000 Rovers fans showed a real fervent passion for their club. They did their club and country proud with their support.

Shamrock Rovers may be out of European competition, but they have created memories this season that will live with their fans for a long time to come. Hopefully, they will be back next season and progress even further in European competition.
