In some ways, Caoimhín Kelleher’s presence at Liverpool has been the best move for both the football club and the player. You might think that being the number two goalkeeper to the best ‘keeper on the planet is not a great career move, but luckily for Kelleher, Alisson Becker has always been prone to injury.
It means that the Republic of Ireland international has enjoyed more than a few spells as Liverpool’s first-choice shot stopper, but it is almost certain that he is going to be leaving Anfield this summer. The question is, where should he go to secure his future as Ireland’s number one?
About Caoimhín Kelleher

Born in Cork on the 23rd of November 1998, Caoimhín Odhrán Kelleher attended Presentation Brothers College before joining Ringmahon Rangers as a youngster. He initially played outfield before being switched to play as a goalkeeper for the Irish side, where he impressed enough to warrant a move to the Liverpool FC Academy in 2015.
By the time the club went to the United States of America on a pre-season tour in 2018, Kelleher had done enough to be an important part of the programme and signed a new long-term contract with the Reds that August.
He was an unused substitute for the Champions League final in 2019, in which Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur, meaning that he was just the 12th Irishman to win the competition and the first to do so for more than a decade. In the years that followed, Kelleher was given more and more opportunities to impress, both thanks to Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp’s insistence that he be given the cup competitions and the fact that Alisson Becker was regularly injured.

He signed a new contract in the June of 2021 that would keep him at the club until 2026, winning a Premier League winners’ medal in the 2024-2025 season.
Why He’s Leaving Liverpool
Given the success that Kelleher has enjoyed whilst at Anfield, the obvious question to ask would be why it is that he’s likely to leave Liverpool this summer. The answer comes in the form of his own long-term ambitions, with many considering the Republic of Ireland international to be more than good enough to be a number one somewhere. It is also worth remembering that the Reds signed Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Georgian goalkeeper, last summer, allowing him to remain on loan with Valencia until the end of the season before arriving at Anfield for the future.

Mamardashvili is seen as Alisson’s long-term replacement by many inside the club, which means that Kelleher won’t be able to forge his career at Anfield if he wants to be a number one. Although he’s had countless opportunities to impress at Liverpool, including scoring the winning goal in the League Cup final in the 2023-2024 season, Kelleher isn’t being seen as the club’s long-term answer to the goalkeeping question. Having played for the Republic of Ireland at numerous age groups and become the first-choice goalkeeper for his national side, he will want to move on to secure his place in the national setup.
Where Kelleher Might End Up
One of the things that Liverpool have been very good at in recent years is in getting good fees for their ‘unwanted’ players. From the likes of Fabio Carvalho and Sepp van den Berg through to Takumi Minamino and Harry Wilson, the Merseyside club has been excellent at ensuring that the value that they put on a play is met by the buying club. With that in mind, it is extremely unlikely that Kelleher is going to be sold for a nominal fee this summer, even if the Irishman does only have one year left on his contract. Instead, clubs will have to pay up if they want to secure his services.
One of the clubs being linked with a possible move for Kelleher is Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side has benefited from the presence of Ederson in net for years now, but it looks increasingly likely that the Brazilian shot-stopper will be moved on this summer. Although his style of play has suited Guardiola, insomuch as he’s more like a midfielder than a goalkeeper thanks to his range of passing, as an actual goalkeeper he hasn’t always impressed. Kelleher knows what it takes to perform at the highest level whilst also being excellent with the ball at his feet, so a move there would make sense.

Whilst a link to Celtic would make sense for Kelleher to ensure that he remains in the consciousness of the Irish thanks to the popularity of the club on the Emerald Isle, the truth of the matter is that if he wants to remain the first-choice goalkeeper for the Republic of Ireland’s national side, then staying in the Premier League is probably the move that makes the most sense. With that in mind, the strong links between Bournemouth and the Irishman would make sense for both parties, given the fact that he would become the number one at the Cherries and play regularly.
